Drapers’ Maylands Primary School is celebrating a highly positive Ofsted report that recognises the school’s Exceptional personal development provision and strong standards across key areas of school life.

The school welcomed Ofsted in November 2025 and was one of the very first schools to be inspected under the new Ofsted framework. Inspectors praised the “transformational impact” of the school’s work in personal development and wellbeing, describing it as integral to every aspect of school life. Leaders were commended for their “relentless focus” on preparing pupils “incredibly well for the next stage of education and life beyond Maylands.”

Exceptional Personal Development

Ofsted highlighted the school’s carefully sequenced enrichment and curriculum programme, which ensures pupils develop increasing confidence, resilience and global awareness as they move from Reception to Year 6. Inspectors noted that pupils are “extremely well prepared for life in modern Britain” and benefit from a wide range of experiences including leadership opportunities, themed enrichment days, music festivals, careers events and residential trips.

The report recognises the school’s strong emphasis on pupils’ wellbeing, social and emotional development, and online safety. Staff provide both universal and targeted support to ensure that every pupil thrives. Inspectors described the impact of this work as “transformational.”

Strong Standards Across the School

The school was judged to have strong standards in attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, early years provision, inclusion, and leadership and governance.

Attendance is consistently above national averages for the past three years, including for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Persistent absence is significantly below national averages. Ofsted praised leaders’ rigorous monitoring systems and proactive work with families to remove barriers to attendance.

Inspectors also noted pupils’ “excellent behaviour and attitudes to learning,” calm and purposeful classrooms, and a culture of respect and inclusion. Bullying is rare, and pupils report feeling safe and well supported.

Broad Curriculum and Improving Outcomes

Ofsted recognised the school’s broad curriculum, designed to ensure pupils become confident, articulate and knowledgeable young people ready for secondary school. Teaching was described as highly consistent, clear and engaging, with strong subject knowledge across staff.

With strong foundations and rising results, Drapers’ Maylands Primary School was one of the top 10 performing primary schools in Havering last year. Provisional outcomes show further improvement for this year, demonstrating the positive impact of leaders’ work to strengthen the curriculum and address areas for development.

Inclusive Culture

Inspectors commended the school’s highly inclusive ethos, underpinned by staff knowing pupils “incredibly well.” Robust systems ensure that any barriers to learning or wellbeing are quickly identified and addressed. Support is carefully designed so that pupils remain fully included in classroom learning alongside their peers.

A School Community to Be Proud Of

Ofsted reported that pupils have a strong sense of belonging and are “rightly proud” of their school. New pupils settle quickly, relationships between staff and pupils are warm and respectful, and children benefit from a wide range of enrichment opportunities that build confidence and aspiration.

“We are incredibly proud that Ofsted has recognised the exceptional personal development and inclusive culture that sit at the heart of Maylands. Our staff are deeply committed to ensuring every child is known, supported and inspired. We are pleased with our strong foundations and rising results represent this year on year. We remain ambitious for every single pupil at Maylands and will ensure they receive the highest quality education and leave us fully prepared for the next stage of their journey.”

Trudy Spillane, Executive Principal

“This report reflects the dedication of our staff, the support of our families and the enthusiasm of our pupils. Maylands is a school where children thrive academically and personally, and we are proud of the difference it makes to the community.”

Lucy Panter, Chair of Governors

With improving outcomes, strong phonics and writing results, and a relentless focus on removing barriers to learning, Maylands continues to go from strength to strength.
